Shihan Mike Norman started his karate training with Budo-kan karate in 1976 under the guidance of Sensei Vic Sykes at Ninja S.A. He then trained under Sensei Paddy Carson at Kyokoshinkai for many years where he received his 1st Dan (Shodan) in Full contact karate, moving to Shukokai Karate under Sensei John Ferreira, Sensei Lionel Marinus and Shihan Kimura in 1981 and finally joining Shihan Tomiyama at Kofukan International in 2001.

After being graded to Shodan with Shukokai Karate in 1984, Shihan Mike regularly won Natal and South African Championship titles. He was selected to represent the South African Shukokai Team at the “Black Cat” team events (1985) as well as the “Carling black label” National Team events in 1986, 1987 and 1988. He was again selected to represent South Africa at the Japan World Champs in 1988 - topping his competitive career with the World Champion title in 1992

2. Shihan Mike taught karate in the Natal townships to disadvantaged students in 1982 prior to the new South Africa.

Shihan Mike Norman competed in many South African Team events both locally and Internationally, with Team Events being his favourite event as “it took way individuality and made you think of your team mates first”
During his competitive career, he was given permission to open his first Dojo in 1984 and juggled his own training and goals with training and developing many South African and World Champions in his own as well as other dojos.

Shihan Mike was National Coach for the SOUTH AFRICAN KARATE TEAM from 2001 to 2012, some of the highlights being: WKF Championships Senior Coach in Munich( 2001), WKF Championships Junior Coach in TURKEY (2006),2. Commonwealth Championships Senior Coach in SCOTLAND (2008),Commonwealth Senior coach in JOHANNESBURG ( 2009) ZONE 6 and UFAK 2001 to 2012.
When not competing, Shihan Mike spent time in the dojo, sharing his knowledge with his students…as well as developing players and karate enthusiasts in underprivileged areas in the early 1980’s.
In 1994 he decided to stop competing and “give back” to karate by coaching the Natal Team for over 10 years. He was later rewarded for his efforts and success by being appointed to the “National Coaching Commission” in 2000. In 2005 he was appointed as “Elite National Team Preparation Coach” until his retirement in 2011.

Since joining Kofukan International with Shihan Tomiyama as a single dojo in 2001, Shihan Mike has grown the membership of Kofukan in South Africa to include 4 clubs in Durban, 1 in Newcastle, 5 in Eastern Cape, 1 in Johannesburg and 3 in Northern Gauteng.
